My Top Summer Fashion Staple: The Humble White Dress
As soon as summer arrives, there’s one piece I find myself reaching for more than anything else: a simple white dress.
Effortless, timeless and endlessly versatile, it’s the foundation of my summer wardrobe, taking me from days in the kitchen garden to countryside lunches, coastal holidays and everything in between. In this post, I’m sharing why the humble white dress has become my ultimate summer staple, along with a few of my favourite styles and how I love to wear them throughout the season.
When shopping for my summer wardrobe, I like to consider quality over quantity. Think about the materials used within the pieces, with this being especially important during a hot summer when you’ll feel far more comfortable in a breathable cotton or linen dress, rather than polyester. A perennial dress for me needs to be a piece that is worth saving for, and a piece that I’ll reach for year after year, which is why I favour timeless styles over trend pieces.
There’s something quintessentially British about a white cotton dress in summer; they feel effortlessly elegant without looking like you’re trying too hard. White dresses are endlessly versatile too and can be styled up or down to suit a variety of events; perfect for Wimbledon with a wicker bag and espadrilles, great for garden parties with raffia mules and a straw hat. Ideal for summer holiday evenings with gold jewellery and sandals, or paired with a knit thrown over your shoulders for cooler evenings – this was a style I loved in Nantucket!
