Top Tips For Keeping Your Bouquet In Bloom For Longer
Cut your stems at an angle
This means that water will be able to flow more easily into your stems, keeping the flowers hydrated and fed. Be sure to use sharp scissors to avoid crushing the stems.
Remove the lower leaves
Remove any foliage on the lower half of the stem, particularly any foliage that would end up underwater, otherwise it can rot which will cause a bacterial buildup.
Add a splash of vinegar to the water
This creates a slightly alkaline environment which reduces the growth of bacteria within the water. You could also add a little sugar as a homemade feed for your blooms.
Refresh the water regularly
Every day or two, tip out the old water from the vase and replace with fresh water. This helps reduce the buildup of bacteria within the vase.
Re-trim your stems every 2-3 days
The stems can get clogged at the base over time, so it’s best to re-trim your stems (at an angle of course!) every few days to allow the stems to keep taking up water.
Keep your blooms out of direct sunlight
Your blooms will last longer if kept out of the sun, and away from heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.
Collect your blooms in the morning or the evening, rather than in the heat of the day for the freshest blooms possible.
Take a jar or a bucket of cold water around with you, and place your blooms straight into the water as you pick, to prevent your blooms becoming dehydrated.
Choose blooms that are just starting to open, rather than blooms that have already been open for several days.
